Is Your Dog Carrying 32x More Poison Than You?
Aug 02, 2025
If your dog has been itchy, anxious, or getting sick more often, there might be a hidden reason, and it’s not something your vet is likely to mention.
It’s called glyphosate (the active ingredient in Roundup) and it's showing up in alarming levels in our dogs. One study found that dogs had 32x more glyphosate in their urine than their humans living in the same household. That’s not just a little exposure…that’s a toxic load.
Even if you don’t spray your lawn, your neighbors might. Parks, sidewalks, golf courses and even city-maintained green spaces are often treated. And it doesn’t stop there. Glyphosate is also lurking in your dog’s kibble, their water and even in some treats labeled “organic.”
Glyphosate has been linked to cancer, gut damage, skin issues, hormone disruption and behavior changes in dogs. It breaks down the gut lining, messes with detox pathways and overworks the liver. Basically, it causes a cascade of problems, and our dogs are absorbing it through their paws, their food and their environment every single day.
But here’s the good news: You can start to gently detox your dog and lower their toxic load. It doesn’t have to be overwhelming or expensive. It just takes some awareness, small changes and the right support tools.
5 Steps to Start Detoxing Your Dog:
1. Avoid + Eliminate Exposure
- Investigate your dog’s food. Avoid kibble with grains, legumes (especially chickpeas) and seed oils. Look for companies that test for glyphosate.
- Whenever possible, opt for raw or gently cooked foods, or at least a brand committed to clean, non-GMO ingredients.
- Use filtered or reverse osmosis water, and re-mineralize by adding a PINCH of Real Salt it before giving it to your dog. Tap water can be a source of glyphosate, too! Cell salts like Bioplasma can be added to water for benefits as well,
- If your dog has a ton of symptoms, in addition to working with a Naturopathic Doctor one-on-one, you may want to consider zooming into their glyphosate load. You can test your pet for glyphosate exposure from Parley Pet here.
2. Block Glyphosate from Storing in the Body
- Glyphosate mimics the amino acid glycine in the body, which disrupts healthy protein formation.
- Add bone broth a few times per week to support glycine levels (avoid this step initially if your dog is histamine-sensitive).
- Over time, small daily amounts help protect your dog’s brain, liver and gut. You can put bone broth in a little ice cube tray and give that as a little treat.
- You can consider a glycine supplement, but that's a more of an advanced conversation. Work with a naturopathic practitioner on this.
3. Bind + Eliminate Toxins
- Add Ion Gut Health for Pets to water bowls daily to strengthen the gut lining and defend against toxins like glyphosate. This is an easy, super gentle approach to supporting your guts biome. I just do a squirt or two squirts. If you’re dog has symptoms, you could consider working with this product more intentionally following the recommended dosage guidelines.
- For deeper detox, use Cellcore’s Carboxy (requires working with a naturopathic practitioner). If you are inside a Fiercely Empowered Mama or the Cleansing Circle, you do have access to Carboxy. If you want to join the Cleansing Circle, you can here.
- Try detox baths with fulvic/humic minerals occasionally. This is especially helpful after outdoor exposure! I will be releasing a product here soon that is going to have amazing humic and fulvic acid as part of dirt baths for our children, but also for our pets. If you want to be among the first to know about it, join our email list here.
- You can do a simple detox bath for your dog’s whole body or just their paws if they’ve been walking on sprayed areas. Here’s a recipe to give your dog a full-body detox bath.
You can wash your dog's paws in a shallow basin or your bathtub with Castile soap, then rinse and apply the apple cider vinegar mixture.
How often can you bathe your pet? Indoor/outdoor pets need quarterly (or more frequent, depending on toxin exposure, age, health, and diet) detoxing. Metro and country dogs, due to asphalt exposure, heavily used parks, or general mischief, require monthly detoxing.
4. Support Liver Function + Calm Inflammation
- Use milk thistle to nourish and rebuild the liver (safe for all dogs). Milk thistle is an amazing herb that is so supportive and restorative for the liver and helps it recover from a glyphosate burden. It might be something that you offer your pet daily.
- A couple of times a week, add turmeric for inflammation and to help neutralize glyphosate. I love using Truvani Turmeric Curcumin a couple of times per week in a little butter or ghee. Turmeric supports inflammation, detox, digestion, joint health, and microbial balance. It protects cells, boosts liver function, and helps the body heal without harsh suppression. You can make your own Golden Turmeric Paste with the recipe:
- Finally, a small splash of apple cider vinegar (if tolerated) neutralizes glyphosate and adds beneficial bacteria and supports gut health. Don't give your dog undiluted apple cider vinegar. Add it to something yummy as a treat, like a little raw meatball. You could also dilute it in water and syringe it into their mouth. 1 teaspoon for a 15 lb dogs, 2 teaspoons for 16 to 35 lb dogs and a tablespoon for dogs 36-84 lbs.
5. Repair the Gut + Strengthen the Immune System
- Add Fidospore probiotic from Microbiome Labs. It’s safe for long-term use and ideal for healing leaky gut. It helps diversify the missing keystone species, and it's going to offer amazing support for the leaky gut that your dog is dealing with due to glyphosate. (Note: Do not purchase this supplement from Amazon) See why here.
- Once symptoms stabilize, it can be given just once or twice a week as maintenance.
- Introduce small amounts of fermented foods as tolerated. They are beneficial, no matter what kind of diet you feed your dog.
Your dog’s body has an incredible ability to heal when it’s supported gently and consistently. These five steps form the foundation of a long-term wellness plan that strengthens the gut, detoxes the liver and lowers the overall toxic burden your pup is carrying.
You don’t need to do everything at once—just start with what feels manageable. A small change is still a powerful one.
