I'm on a mission to help mothers become the confident healers of their homes so they can build extraordinary health from the inside out.
But I didn't start here. I started at war with my own body.
At twenty-four, I was a junk-food-and-caffeine addict and a closet binger, trapped in a cycle of starvation, diet pills and endless miles on the treadmill. I hated my reflection. No matter what I did, I believed my body was the problem, something to fix, shrink and control. I believed that if I could just change my body, I'd finally feel at peace in it. That belief eventually led me to schedule a breast reduction surgery, certain it would finally give me the peace I'd been chasing.
Seven days into recovery, everything changed. I got really sick.
Months of testing later, the diagnosis came: drug-induced hepatitis. My liver was on fire and on the fast track to failure. My skin and eyes turned yellow. My body was waving every red flag it could, demanding that I finally pay attention.
The wake-up call.
The turning point came in an exam room when a gastroenterologist said six words I had no framework for:
"Let food be thy medicine."
I didn't understand them. But I felt the truth of them in my bones.
I drove home, fell to my knees in the parking lot, and thanked God. I knew this was a divine wake-up call. It wasn't happening to me. It was happening for a bigger purpose.
Something cracked open. I had spent years treating my body like the enemy, something to conquer instead of care for. And I finally understood that if I wanted to heal, I had to stop punishing and start nourishing.
But what I didn't realize then was that nourishment wasn't only about food. It was about learning to love the very body I'd spent years trying to change. For so long, I believed loving myself would be the reward that came after I healed.
Instead, I discovered the opposite.
Loving myself wasn't the reward that came after healing. It was the missing piece that allowed healing to begin.
That realization became the seed of everything I do today.
The why that went deeper.
Healing transformed my body, but it also awakened something inside me. I couldn't stop asking questions. I wanted to understand why the body healed, not just that it could. I immersed myself in nutrition, hungry to learn everything I could.
Then, at twenty-nine, two pink lines changed everything again. I realized I knew how to nourish myself, but not yet how to nourish the little life growing inside me.
At eight weeks pregnant, I crossed paths with a naturopathic doctor, and my whole world lit up. The herbs. The homeopathy. The terrain. The lineage of women who had carried this wisdom for generations. It felt as though I'd finally found the language I'd been searching for all along. Something awakened in me that I could never put back to sleep.
That moment didn't make me Dr. Tonya Holcomb overnight. It planted the seed. Seven years of naturopathic school nurtured it, followed by certification after certification, because once I started learning, I simply couldn't stop.
The child who changed everything.
Then I became a mother. And my son became my greatest teacher.
He came out swinging. Intense from the very first day, and it only intensified from there. He couldn't settle. Couldn't downshift. Couldn't be soothed by the things that soothed other babies. Explosive meltdowns. A big, loud, constant signal that something wasn't okay. His little nervous system was communicating with me every single day.
And I was doing everything "right." We had a deeply natural home. I had spent years studying the body and was faithfully applying everything I knew. I truly believed I was giving him everything he needed. And yet, we still struggled. For years. I couldn't shake the feeling that there had to be another piece of the puzzle.
The world had plenty of opinions. Be firmer. Be more structured. More disciplined. Stop babying him. One person even suggested medication. I walked out of that room and never went back.
Here is what I knew in my bones.
I would never regret loving him through this. I would never regret choosing compassion over control. This was not a child trying to ruin my life. This was a child communicating in the only language his body knew.
So I refused to shame him. I refused to make it mean something about him, or about me.
Instead, I became a student of my son. Every answer uncovered another question, and every question brought me one step closer to understanding what his body had been trying to tell me all along. I won't pretend I tried everything, but I spent years searching, learning and piecing together the puzzle until the picture finally began to come into focus.
And slowly, the real him began to emerge. The space between the storms grew wider. The storms grew shorter. The little boy I always knew was in there started coming home to himself.
He is thirteen now.
Our home has an ease and a flow it never had in those early years. Watching him today, it's hard to believe how far we've come. That transformation wasn't luck. It was the result of learning to understand what his body had been trying to communicate all along.
Babies do not come into this world malfunctioning. They come messaging.
He taught me that truth.
And learning to read his messages didn't just change him. It changed me. The mother I became. The wife I became. The practitioner I am today. Without every hard, holy moment of his journey, Fiercely Empowered Mama (FEM) would not exist.
Why I built FEM.
I walked the long road so you won't have to.
The gift buried in all those years is this: I now know what truly moves the needle, and what only looks like it does. You don't have to spend years piecing it all together the way I did.
I built Fiercely Empowered Mama to be everything I desperately needed as a new mom but couldn't find. A mentor. A community. A place to ask questions without judgment. The language to understand my own child's body. And the confidence to trust myself again.
Today, FEM is a movement of mothers becoming the confident healers of their homes. Women who are learning to understand the body's messages, trust their intuition and build extraordinary health from the inside out.
Together, we're raising a generation of children whose symptoms are met with curiosity instead of fear, and whose bodies are understood instead of silenced.
I don't just teach this. I live it in my own home first, as a wife of eighteen years and a mama.
This is the work I've given my life to. And nearly two decades in, I'm still learning, still growing and still going deeper.
Because here's what I know now:
Health was never the destination.
It was the doorway.
And on the other side of it is the vibrant life you were always meant to live.
Wherever you are on your own journey, everything I've built is here to meet you.
